Key facts

  • 0.3% of homes with a DPE in Brest report air conditioning, against 9.2% in mainland France.
  • 16% of homes with a DPE in Brest were built before 1948, against 32% in mainland France.
  • 21% of valid DPEs in Brest were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself (29% in mainland France).
  • 5.6% of homes with a DPE in Brest are rated F or G, against 12% in mainland France — and the gap persists at comparable building age and type (6.6%).

Energy and climate ratings

Among 35,008 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Brest, rating D is the most common; 39% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Brest had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 6.6% (+1.0 pt versus the observed figure).

By floor area, the F+G share among homes with a DPE in Brest ranges from 4.4% (40-69 m²) to 7.7% (25-39 m²).

For 19% of homes with a DPE in Brest whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

13% of homes with a DPE in Brest whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (4,589 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

Frequently asked questions — Brest

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Brest?

Of the 35,008 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 1,960 are rated F or G (5.6%), including 495 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 6.6%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

How are homes in Brest heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Brest are mainly heated by electricity (44%), natural gas (43%), district heating (10%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Brest?

10% of homes with a DPE in Brest are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

Why are some DPEs in Brest generated from the building?

21% of valid DPEs in Brest were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.

What do DPEs in Brest say about summer comfort?

88% of homes with a DPE in Brest fill in the DPE's summer comfort section. Of these, 36% are rated insufficient, 46% average and 18% good. The fill-in rate varies widely: these figures describe DPEs that complete the section, not the whole city.
