Energy and climate ratings

Among 75,373 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Montpellier, rating C is the most common; 65% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Montpellier had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 4.1% (+1.4 pt versus the observed figure).

Small homes are the most often poorly rated in Montpellier: 4.0% of assessed homes under 25 m² are rated F or G, against 1.4% for those of 70-99 m².

For 16% of homes with a DPE in Montpellier whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

14% of homes with a DPE in Montpellier whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (10,217 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

Frequently asked questions — Montpellier

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Montpellier?

Of the 75,373 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 2,048 are rated F or G (2.7%), including 434 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 4.1%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

Which postcode of Montpellier has the highest share of F- or G-rated homes?

Among homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs), it is 34000: 3.6% are rated F or G, out of 33,875 DPEs. 34080 has the lowest share (1.3%). The table by postcode also gives, for each, the share of flats and of homes built before 1948 among assessed homes.

How are homes in Montpellier heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Montpellier are mainly heated by electricity (65%), natural gas (28%), district heating (5.1%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Montpellier?

5.1% of homes with a DPE in Montpellier are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

Why are some DPEs in Montpellier generated from the building?

19% of valid DPEs in Montpellier were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.
