Energy and climate ratings

Among 86,946 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Bordeaux, rating C is the most common; 49% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Bordeaux had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 5.8% (-1.2 pt versus the observed figure).

By floor area, the F+G share among homes with a DPE in Bordeaux ranges from 4.1% (100 m² and over) to 11% (25-39 m²).

For 14% of homes with a DPE in Bordeaux whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

14% of homes with a DPE in Bordeaux whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (11,894 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

On 1 January 2027, the electricity primary-energy conversion factor drops from 1.9 to 1.7 (order of 19 August 2026). Among the 5,990 F- or G-rated homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Bordeaux whose DPE is still valid on that date, whose published class is reproduced and whose scale could be read, 37% could obtain a certificate of a new rating, at least one class better, downloadable from ADEME's DPE-Audit Observatory. The original DPE remains valid until it expires.

Summer comfort and heat

Over the 1991-2020 normal, Bordeaux averages 5.8 days a year above 35 °C and 7.3 nights above 20 °C; projections for 2050 point to 13.6 and 29.2.

The DPE includes a "summer comfort" section. In Bordeaux, 89% of homes with a DPE fill it in; of these, 42% are rated insufficient. This rate depends on who fills in the section, so it is not compared with other cities.

Frequently asked questions — Bordeaux

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Bordeaux?

Of the 86,946 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 6,039 are rated F or G (6.9%), including 1,887 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 5.8%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

Which postcode of Bordeaux has the highest share of F- or G-rated homes?

Among homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs), it is 33000: 8.2% are rated F or G, out of 49,068 DPEs. 33300 has the lowest share (3.2%). The table by postcode also gives, for each, the share of flats and of homes built before 1948 among assessed homes.

How are homes in Bordeaux heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Bordeaux are mainly heated by electricity (61%), natural gas (30%), district heating (7.6%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Bordeaux?

7.6% of homes with a DPE in Bordeaux are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

Why are some DPEs in Bordeaux generated from the building?

27% of valid DPEs in Bordeaux were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.
