Key facts

  • 0.8% of homes with a DPE in Nantes report air conditioning, against 9.2% in mainland France.
  • 30% of F- or G-rated homes in Nantes whose DPE will still be valid could obtain, from 1 January 2027, a certificate of a better new label (20% in mainland France).
  • 9.3% of homes with a DPE in Nantes are on district heating (4.1% in mainland France).
  • 7.3% of homes with a DPE in Nantes are rated F or G, against 12% in mainland France — and the gap persists at comparable building age and type (8.5%).

Energy and climate ratings

Among 89,977 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Nantes, rating C is the most common; 50% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Nantes had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 8.5% (+1.2 pt versus the observed figure).

By floor area, the F+G share among homes with a DPE in Nantes ranges from 5.4% (70-99 m²) to 11% (25-39 m²).

For 20% of homes with a DPE in Nantes whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

12% of homes with a DPE in Nantes whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (11,207 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

On 1 January 2027, the electricity primary-energy conversion factor drops from 1.9 to 1.7 (order of 19 August 2026). Among the 6,530 F- or G-rated homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Nantes whose DPE is still valid on that date, whose published class is reproduced and whose scale could be read, 30% could obtain a certificate of a new rating, at least one class better, downloadable from ADEME's DPE-Audit Observatory. The original DPE remains valid until it expires.

Frequently asked questions — Nantes

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Nantes?

Of the 89,977 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 6,576 are rated F or G (7.3%), including 2,119 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 8.5%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

Why are some DPEs in Nantes generated from the building?

35% of valid DPEs in Nantes were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.

Which postcode of Nantes has the highest share of F- or G-rated homes?

Among homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs), it is 44000: 11% are rated F or G, out of 35,896 DPEs. 44200 has the lowest share (3.6%). The table by postcode also gives, for each, the share of flats and of homes built before 1948 among assessed homes.

How are homes in Nantes heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Nantes are mainly heated by electricity (47%), natural gas (43%), district heating (9.3%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Nantes?

9.3% of homes with a DPE in Nantes are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

Comparable cities

Cities chosen for their similar size, climate, building stock or département.

Among its comparable cities (Angers, Tours, La Rochelle, Poitiers, Nice and Clermont-Ferrand), Nantes has neither the highest nor the lowest value on any indicator; however, its share of district-heated homes (9.3%) is above the group median (4.1%) and its median price per m² for a flat (€3,667) is above the group median (€3,001).
