Key facts

  • Natural gas heats 53% of homes with a DPE in Reims, against 36% in mainland France.
  • 55% of valid DPEs in Reims were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself (29% in mainland France).
  • 8.6% of homes with a DPE in Reims are on district heating (4.1% in mainland France).
  • 25% of homes with a DPE in Reims have shared (collective) heating (15% in mainland France).

Energy and climate ratings

Among 50,312 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Reims, rating D is the most common; 37% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Reims had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 9.7% (-0.5 pt versus the observed figure).

By floor area, the F+G share among homes with a DPE in Reims ranges from 6.5% (70-99 m²) to 16% (25-39 m²).

For 22% of homes with a DPE in Reims whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

11% of homes with a DPE in Reims whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (5,661 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

1,693 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Reims are rated G, i.e. 3.4% of homes with a DPE (4.4% in the département, 4.4% in mainland France). Since 1 January 2025, a G-rated home no longer meets the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

3,446 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Reims are rated F, i.e. 6.8% of homes with a DPE (7.5% in the département, 7.2% in mainland France). From 1 January 2028, rating F will no longer meet the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

10,103 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Reims are rated E, i.e. 20% of homes with a DPE (21% in the département, 17% in mainland France). From 1 January 2034, rating E will no longer meet the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

On 1 January 2027, the electricity primary-energy conversion factor drops from 1.9 to 1.7 (order of 19 August 2026). Among the 5,098 F- or G-rated homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Reims whose DPE is still valid on that date, whose published class is reproduced and whose scale could be read, 20% could obtain a certificate of a new rating, at least one class better, downloadable from ADEME's DPE-Audit Observatory. The original DPE remains valid until it expires.

Heating and hot water

Natural gas comes first: 53% of homes with a DPE in Reims rely on it for heating, and 25% have shared heating.

By heating energy, the share of F- or G-rated homes in Reims ranges from 2.1% for homes heated by district heating to 72% for those heated with heating oil; it is 10% with electricity.

In the 2022 census, INSEE counts 28% of main residences mainly heated by electricity in Reims; among homes with a DPE, the share is 37%.

Of the 4,307 homes with a DPE in Reims heated by a district network, 80% declare their network's identifier. The main ones: “CROIX ROUGE” (5106C), 63% of connected homes (0.052 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.069 life-cycle); “VY'ENERGIE” (5103C), 9.7% of connected homes (0.012 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.032 life-cycle); “ST RÉMI” (5108C), 4.4% of connected homes (0.098 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.112 life-cycle). CO₂ contents set by the French order of 30 March 2026, applicable since 25 May 2026: an older DPE may have used other values.

Summer comfort and heat

Over the 1991-2020 normal, Reims averages 1.9 days a year above 35 °C and 1.5 nights above 20 °C; projections for 2050 point to 5.7 and 8.2.

The DPE includes a "summer comfort" section. In Reims, 92% of homes with a DPE fill it in; of these, 26% are rated insufficient. This rate depends on who fills in the section, so it is not compared with other cities.

Estimated consumption and cost

The median cost estimated by the DPE in Reims is €895 a year for a flat (201 kWh of primary energy per m²) and €1,665 for a house (208 kWh/m²). Per unit of floor area, the median cost of a flat is €20 per m² a year (€19 in the département, €19 in mainland France). This cost is conventional: it assumes standard use and the energy prices in force when each DPE was issued, not a household's actual bill.

Frequently asked questions — Reims

Why are some DPEs in Reims generated from the building?

55% of valid DPEs in Reims were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Reims?

Of the 50,312 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 5,139 are rated F or G (10%), including 1,693 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 9.7%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

How are homes in Reims heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Reims are mainly heated by natural gas (53%), electricity (37%), district heating (8.6%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Reims?

8.6% of homes with a DPE in Reims are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

What do DPEs in Reims say about summer comfort?

92% of homes with a DPE in Reims fill in the DPE's summer comfort section. Of these, 26% are rated insufficient, 57% average and 17% good. The fill-in rate varies widely: these figures describe DPEs that complete the section, not the whole city.

Comparable cities

Cities chosen for their similar size, climate, building stock or département.

Among its comparable cities (Metz, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Orléans, Nancy and Angers), Reims has neither the highest nor the lowest value on any indicator; however, its share of F- or G-rated homes (10%) is above the group median (8.5%) and its share of homes built before 1948 (29%) is below the group median (35%).
