Energy and climate ratings

Among 149,068 valid DPEs of homes (excluding generated DPEs) in Lyon, rating C is the most common; 41% reach ratings A to C.

If the homes with a DPE in Lyon had the same mix of building age and type (house, flat) as mainland France, the F+G share would be 11% (+2.2 pts versus the observed figure).

By floor area, the F+G share among homes with a DPE in Lyon ranges from 4.2% (70-99 m²) to 14% (25-39 m²).

For 16% of homes with a DPE in Lyon whose published class is reproduced, the climate rating (greenhouse-gas emissions) sets the DPE class: the final rating is the worse of the two (18% in mainland France).

12% of homes with a DPE in Lyon whose published class is reproduced would change rating with 5 kWh/m²/year of consumption, or 1 kg CO₂/m²/year of emissions, more or less: they sit on a class boundary (17,886 homes; 12% in mainland France). For them, a small measurement gap or a minor work can move the letter.

G, F and E ratings: the decent-housing timetable

4,452 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Lyon are rated G, i.e. 3.0% of homes with a DPE (3.1% in the département, 4.4% in mainland France). Since 1 January 2025, a G-rated home no longer meets the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

8,581 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Lyon are rated F, i.e. 5.8% of homes with a DPE (5.6% in the département, 7.2% in mainland France). From 1 January 2028, rating F will no longer meet the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

24,691 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Lyon are rated E, i.e. 17% of homes with a DPE (15% in the département, 17% in mainland France). From 1 January 2034, rating E will no longer meet the energy performance level of decent housing (Law 89-462, s. 6).

On 1 January 2027, the electricity primary-energy conversion factor drops from 1.9 to 1.7 (order of 19 August 2026). Among the 12,949 F- or G-rated homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) in Lyon whose DPE is still valid on that date, whose published class is reproduced and whose scale could be read, 32% could obtain a certificate of a new rating, at least one class better, downloadable from ADEME's DPE-Audit Observatory. The original DPE remains valid until it expires.

Heating and hot water

Electricity comes first: 51% of homes with a DPE in Lyon rely on it for heating, and 22% have shared heating.

By heating energy, the share of F- or G-rated homes in Lyon ranges from 2.5% for homes heated with wood to 45% for those heated with heating oil; it is 11% with electricity.

In the 2022 census, INSEE counts 40% of main residences mainly heated by electricity in Lyon; among homes with a DPE, the share is 51%.

Of the 10,608 homes with a DPE in Lyon heated by a district network, 71% declare their network's identifier. The main ones: “RÉSEAU DE LYON” (6905C), 52% of connected homes (0.094 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.112 life-cycle); “QUARTIER LA DUCHÈRE ET LYON 9E” (6904C), 14% of connected homes (0.073 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.097 life-cycle); “ZH CHAMPVERT” (6915C), 2.7% of connected homes (0.207 kg CO₂/kWh direct, 0.233 life-cycle). CO₂ contents set by the French order of 30 March 2026, applicable since 25 May 2026: an older DPE may have used other values.

Over the 1991-2020 normal, Lyon averages 4.5 days a year above 35 °C and 9.7 nights above 20 °C; projections for 2050 point to 15.2 and 29.6.

The DPE includes a "summer comfort" section. In Lyon, 88% of homes with a DPE fill it in; of these, 32% are rated insufficient. This rate depends on who fills in the section, so it is not compared with other cities.

Estimated consumption and cost

The median cost estimated by the DPE in Lyon is €985 a year for a flat (195 kWh of primary energy per m²) and €1,915 for a house (205 kWh/m²). Per unit of floor area, the median cost of a flat is €20 per m² a year (€18 in the département, €19 in mainland France). This cost is conventional: it assumes standard use and the energy prices in force when each DPE was issued, not a household's actual bill.

Frequently asked questions — Lyon

How many energy-inefficient homes are there in Lyon?

Of the 149,068 homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs) since 1 July 2021 whose DPE is valid on 25 August 2026, 13,033 are rated F or G (8.7%), including 4,452 rated G. At building age and type comparable to mainland France, the share would be 11%. These are homes with a DPE, not every home in the city.

Which arrondissement of Lyon has the most F- or G-rated homes?

Among homes with a DPE (excluding generated DPEs), it is the 9th arrondissement (7.0% F or G). At building age and type comparable to mainland France, its share would be 11%. The table by arrondissement shows both figures for each.

Why are some DPEs in Lyon generated from the building?

31% of valid DPEs in Lyon were generated from the building's DPE, without a rating measured for the flat itself. The rules allow this for flats in an already-assessed building. These DPEs are counted separately on this page: they report F and G less often in older buildings, and almost never summer comfort.

How are homes in Lyon heated?

According to their DPEs, homes in Lyon are mainly heated by electricity (51%), natural gas (41%), district heating (7.1%). In mainland France, electricity heats 50% of homes with a DPE and natural gas 36%.

Is district heating common in Lyon?

7.1% of homes with a DPE in Lyon are on district heating, against 4.1% in mainland France. In the DPE, district heating's primary energy is counted with a factor of 1, and its greenhouse-gas emissions depend on each network's own carbon content.

Comparable cities

Cities chosen for their similar size, climate, building stock or département.

Among its comparable cities (Saint-Étienne, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Marseille and Besançon), Lyon has neither the highest nor the lowest value on any indicator; however, its share of district-heated homes (7.1%) is above the group median (4.6%) and its share of homes built before 1948 (43%) is above the group median (31%).
